Compassion often isn’t seen as a power but as a weakness. Compassion may be associated with giving in, being subservient, or having no boundaries. But when we investigate the energy of compassion, it has a real strength to it. A great deal of that strength comes from wisdom, which gives us balance (compassion for ourselves as well as others), perspective (a realistic sense of limits), and an ability to hold many aspects of life at the same time, such as darkness and light. All three are functions of the voice of wisdom, which is equanimity.

“Of all the contemporary women Buddhist teachers, Sharon Salzberg, is the most radically open... the one teacher I have met throughout the years whom I can spend lots of time with, speaking both about the sacred and the mundane”
